If you follow me at all on Facebook and Twitter then you know that I am quite fond of crowdsourcing for questions both big and small. So perhaps it is not entirely surprising that I would reach out to folks near and far as thought partners for my discernment about what’s next in my life. Even if you don’t think you have anything to offer or you just don’t really care – I covet your insight and wisdom.
For the past 15 months, I’ve been serving as the Pastoral Resident of Fourth Presbyterian in Chicago. My position here will conclude at the end of July in 2016. I knew coming in that a big church was probably not going to be my long-term context, and though I love Fourth very much – I continue to feel that way. In fact, I am largely looking at non-church jobs for my next move. That isn’t to say that I wouldn’t prayerfully consider a particular job purely because it is in a church-setting, but I am actively looking beyond that.
I am looking at nonprofit work. I am looking especially at faith-based advocacy work. I am looking at new and alternative ministry development. I’m not opposed to cobbling a couple of things together if I could make it work.I feel called to ministry – I’m just thinking outside the box as far as what that means.
I care about the intersection of theology and justice and how that impacts the daily lives of people and our policies. I care about LGBTQ justice, and women’s justice, and youth, and education, and immigration. I care about issues both domestic and international. I would love to find something that engages my writing abilities and perhaps also my speaking abilities. I love telling stories and convincing people of things. I like creative work and fast-paced environments and a job that is always different. I love preaching and teaching but know that may not be a part of my next job if it’s outside of church. I love collaboration and freedom of movement. I love to travel.
I have concentrated my search primarily in DC because it’s a big city that gets me a little closer to home and isn’t quite as terrible in winter as Chicago. It also has lots of opportunities for faith-based advocacy. I’m also considering Asheville, and Kansas City. Maybe New York. Maybe northern California. Nothing is totally off the table except maybe Alaska. Places with high concentrations of cool Presbys (or just cool people).
If you know of cool organizations I should look into, let me know. If you know cities I should look into, let me know. If you know types of work you think I might be good at or might enjoy, let me know. And-seriously–if you know of jobs I can apply for, LET ME KNOW. I’m free agent as of July 31st, 2016.
I want to get outside of my own head on this one and really listen to God. But I also think God might be speaking through one of you. Feel free to comment here or email me at email@example.com. Thank you all!
